How do I hunt?

Postby Neat234 » Tue Dec 17, 2013 12:34 pm

This may seem like a stupid question but i'm really at wits end here. I can't figure out how to hunt something.

I've tried taking out rabbits by standing next to them and right click. I even turn on faster running. But they just outrun me every time. The one time I did catch up my character didn't do anything anyway.

The only thing i've managed to kill is a chick which I wrung the neck of and it gave me a mangled mess, not useful. I just need a bone to fish or something.

I tried attacking the frog in my inventory by putting him down on the ground but it never attacks him, it just picks him back up again.

I have unarmed combat 2 (realised it was just a stat and not a skill so I wasted my LP)

Don't have will to power, but have hunting. I'm completely out of LP by buying skills I thought would unlock more. I'm studying itsy bitsy's spider web but it's taking ages (left it overnight and its only a third done)

Help, please! :(

Rabbits are the easiest to hunt. Simply go right on top of it turn sprint on then click on him to catch. The rabbit should not be able to run away with sprint on if your right on top of him. Same method can be applied with chickens.

If by some chance you misclick and the rabbit starts to run quickly click the combat icon in the corner and disengage and simply follow him and retry making sure you are right on top of him.

All other hunting requires a ranged weapon or ability to melee them. Stick with rabbits and chickens for now I suggest. Be patient you will get it.

Ok, the only issue is I can't sprint in the area i'm in. I guess i'll have to camp out on grasslands or flats where I can sprint.

Thanks for the help.

If you "sneak up" on the rabbits right (walk up next to them for position), there's no need to use sprint or run. The normal walking speed is just fine. Unless the rabbit is in a swamp or thicket, you'll be able to use run, though, and that is enough to keep them from getting away.

Also, not sure if the bug still exists, but if you pick up a chick and kill it in your inventory, drop it and it turns into a full grown chicken. (In case you're wondering if this is considered "exploiting a bug", it is, but the current dev stance is that we only need to notify them of bugs we find. There are no "consequences" of using bugs for advantage other than those meted out by players.)

I figured out what I was doing wrong.

Turns out it was as simple as double clicking to catch the rabbit, initial click to initiate combat and a second click to catch it. I'm kind of annoyed this isn't explained since you'd think it would be logical your character automatically going for it the moment you click it. But caught my first rabbit earlier with two fast clicks right next to it.

I mean really stuff like this should be in a tips section of the game on loading screens or something.

There is no need to double click on it. If you are, you're still doing something wrong. The first time you right click on it, you should follow and attempt to pick it up. If it is right at your feet, there is nowhere to move and you just pick it up.

No no, double clicking on it was literally the only time it actually worked.

I do exactly what you say, I stand right next to it like right on top of it and right click on it. My character stands there like a wally while the rabbit runs away, but the combat iniated stuff comes up on screen. Only clicking again does it make my character pick it up. I dunno if it's a bug with just me or what.

No? As far as i'm aware I haven't changed mousesettings.

And I just use a wireless mouse with batteries, never heard of a programmable mouse.

ok (btw. you can google "programmable mouse" )

One thing having fun with games like HnH is to find out how things work yourself - but there's also a community that writes tutorials (they are in this subforum) and a Wiki http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Haven_and_Hearth_Wiki ... :)

If you want to combat small animals you'll need the skill Brawling at last to punch frogs or chicks ...
