How does Tracking Work?

I got the ranger skill a while ago and someone trespassed on my land recently nothing was taken or destroyed but I was curious on tracking since luckily its the first time I seen any scents so I picked up the scent and tried to track and im not sure what to do or if i been doing it right.
I'm taking a guess its a bit like a pie chart and the piece which is pointing away is the direction i need to go but it stays where i started tracking the scent and the direction and delta numbers don't change also I'm not sure what delta is.
Do I need to wait till the timer runs out and then track from there or go back to the source and go further away and then track again.

The scent has now gone, but I still would like to know how to properly track someone for future use

Delta = degree angle of the pie slice.
Direction = angle. Direction.
You track it, move closer to the direction it's pointing to. A lot closer, just go in that direction for a while. The smaller your delta is, the more precise it is, therefore, the less you have to use the scent to triangulate.
When you move closer, track again with the same scent (it has a cooldown but you don't worry about it if you're doing it right)
Repeat until you've reached destination. Be sure to have many charges on your scent.
also you can use the world map and actually triangulate a scent and pinpoint the location but that takes some prep so the normal way is easier.
