Can't put bait on my rod?

Okay, so I bought the fishing skill. I made a rod, I equipped the line and a bone hook. However, when I go to put the earthworm on, nothing happens. I know how to put things on my rod, but it won't let me equip the bait. Can anyone help? EDIT: I didn't make the rod, my friend did, if that matters.

You just don't see the bait on your rod but it is still there. Put the worm on (left click the worm, hover over your rod and right click) and just try to fish it should work. But make sure that there is a fish node where you try to fish. (Fish have to jump out of the water )

When I left click the rod with the worm in hand, it just tries to replace it in the inventory. When I right click it, nothing happens and I still have it in hand. Thanks, though. Is it something to do with my skill points? I just joined today and I only have 1 point for most the categories.

I just tried with my trading char, you need to buy "fishing" skill to do it.

Only way I know is select your bait and right click the pole.

Nope, I've read every fishing related page on the wiki. I discovered something while playing though, I tried to put a leech on instead of an earthworm, and when I put it on the rod, an earthworm replaced the leech in my hand. So it must be on the rod. But still, when I try to fish it tells me that I need a fully equipped rod. Will it tell me that if the place where I'm fishing doesn't have any fish? I haven't seen any fish in the water I'm trying to fish in, I've just been trying to test the rod.
