How many tiles deep can i dig before I am prone to cave in?
I have dug a mine shaft and I cannot build a mine support on unpaved ground. Plus I can't pave mineshaft ground with stone.

You can only really dig a single tile, and even then, there's still a slight chance you'll get caved in.

Also, you don't need to pave the ground to build a mine support.

also, make sure you are standing on the cave floor tile when you are mining this one tile.

If I remember right for every caved-in rock that hits you miner helm degrades by 5q so 1 cave-in you should be able to survive.
