Odor of Trespassing

I found Odor of Trespassing and used it. Surprisingly there was also a Track Stolen Object option. How is it possible?
(I thought that you leave a theft scent when you steal something.)

Foraging things from a claim do not leave tresspassing scents.

Lifting an item on a claim leaves tresspassing, it's only when you leave the claim you leave theift?
That could be it.

What does the item point to?

So it seems Arcanist solved your riddle and i think he's also right that only leaving claim with lifted item leaves a theft scent.

Yes, Arcanist is right. Lifting an item on a claim leaves a trespass scent with track stolen object. All thefts can track stolen objects. Opening containers dont give you option to track the object opened.
