Hearthfire destroyed but no scents around

I'm a fairly inexperienced player, even if I had played for a long time... I'm having a problem and I don't understand what's going on so I've thought I may ask for advice. At some point during the last 24 hours, my hearthfire has been destroyed inside my claim, but somehow, there are no scents in the area. I haven't found anything about something like this and I'm pretty confused.

Cleary my land is not safe anymore, might understand that as a "get out of here" message and flee somewhere else... I don't know. Anyway, I would like to understand what just happened. Thank you in advance!

do you have Ranging?
Also if I remember right if their stealth is high enough you font see their scents

That was fast! Yes, I have ranging. It's probably what you said about Stealth... that scares me even more

Someone either broke your hearth fire and you can't see their scent because they have high stealth/intelligence and you have low exploration/perception, or someone lured an animal to smash it in an attempt to keep chasing them.

Thank you both. I will try to decide tonight if I should move to a new place or just get over this, rebuild the palisade gate and try to live happy if they let me :S

You need a brickwall if you want to be safe. Build one as soon as you possibly can, make it your #1 priority.

I've logged in today and now I can see the scent... figures!

I've tracked down the intruder and he seems to be far far away. I thought it was one of my neighbours... I guess you never know in this game. Work on the brickwall is proving to be hard, though.

If where your hearthfire is near a house or cave entrance, you can enter and exit to make constant attempt to find scents near the area. Good luck on your brickwall.
