Studying Royal Toadstool takes away HHP?

Postby Brás » Fri May 09, 2014 7:55 am

Today, I woke up with full HHP.

I went exploring and noticed 1/3 of my HHP was gone. I thought I might have eaten something that takes away HHP by mistake, although I didn't see any numbers popping up as it happens when you loose HPP.

So I kept going and didn't pay any attention to it anymore. When I got home I noticed my HHP had dropped to almost nothing:

What the fuck could have caused that? Here's **all** I've done while exploring:

- Ate a lot of blueberries and candleberries (I'm sure I haven't eaten any food that causes damage (according to the tooltip), at least not that much)
- Walked around a lot, even tired
- Boated a lot
- Lifted the boat a lot
- Got hungry, but not very hungry (only when I got home, as in the picture above)
- Got a few leeches (only two, not enough to do that sort of damage)
- Tracked a few scents
- Did some trespassing and stealing
- Traveled to my far away HF
- I was wearing boots the whole time

AFAIK none of those do any damage.

Fearing for my life I immediately stopped smoking my pipe, undressed and went to sleep. I logged in again and noticed the "Royal Toadstool" that I was studying (I didn't eat any) had "HHP 17.3" on the tooltip. I took it off the study window immediately and put a gauze on. I've been playing for ~1h now and the HHP seem to have stopped dropping.

So what the fuck could have cause that? The Toadstool indeed? Something else?
Whatever it was I'm sure there weren't any number popping up showing I was loosing HHP, which I guess should happen.

Oh, I read the note on the Wiki now. Anyway I guess it would be interesting if you could see the HP being lost as usual.

And geez, why entering and leaving a claim takes away HP?

People were abusing scents to DDoS the server. An arbitrary limiter prevents that. It's an unideal solution but it patches things up until a more elegant fix can be put into place.

Its nothing anyone can truly complain about. If you intend to leave a lot of scents you ought to have the constitution for it anyway. It prevents a stalemate in a fight. It creates an inherent limit (that you can invest to extend) to the amount of "loot" a raider can acquire. It further forces him to apply discretion to his actions. Every Wantonly destroyed piece of infrastructure is one less valuable item you can haul home. That might seem inelegant to you because it lacks 'explanation" or something but I think it produces a most elegant effect. If someone DOES bother to shit on your infra, it's a rather pure way to say "Fuck you, personally." For someone to go that out of their way (or just show off their rediculous development).

Perhaps it lacks artistic description but as a game mechanic i think it serves to create a rather elegant form of emergent gameplay. JMO

I thought it was pretty artistic, mostly in its simplicity. I just feel balancing is a bit of a problem. I'd rather it did a damage over time for trespassing and maybe some rebalancing for theft and vandalism, rather than the amount of times you left and re-entered, and decimals would need to implemented for that to work well, and that just seems kind of ugly.
