Is studying them completely pointless?

I studied my dead alts skull with his (child?), which only has 186% LA, and I got 2303 LP. The alt had 123811 LP when it died , Full change.
The skull took about 23 minutes to go from 99% to 100%, from 15:22 to 15:45, which, if my maths is correct is about 38 1/3 hours for the whole study.
The skull was q10.

They're designed so that they're not worth farming alts for. Usually the only ones that are worth studying are from other players you've killed.
