Oh, well converting forest back will take some time regardless of how close trees are. To prevent them from stunting eachother I would give them about 3-4 tiles between each tree, and use a fast growing tree so you can chop and replant generations (as I believe the trigger for a tree converting land to it's native type only occurs during growth spurts of young trees, and doesn't occur for mature trees).
Hearthlings: Marona; Chamberlain (retainer alt), Vincavec (shaman of the Dryad Wells Forest)

Follow-up: Is there a way to plant more than 1 tree from every type of tree? Firs and yews only give 1 cone so 1 tree = 1 sprout. So if your tree fails to sprout, you're losing trees overall on the map.

Only trees that have not matured give less than two cones or seeds. Try this guide to help you choose what you want.
