What do you look for in a claim?

Postby Serani » Tue Jun 03, 2014 9:07 pm

So I had a pretty good thing going (I thought). My previous claim got a bit, bashed up, No big loss. I lived and most of the stuff I cared about was left in tact.

So as I wander around for a new location, what are some things that you vets look for in a claim? Curious what would make a good site for a hermit.

What should I focus on? I'm a new player, I understand I'm likely going to die (a few times) but what would make a good start?

As new as I am, a brickwall is a pipe dream for a while. Any other advice?

Get into a village. There you will learn and be ready to be alone if you like and meanwhile you be safe.

I disagree with this, living alone as a start is a great way to learn to play the game through trial and error, just joining a village makes you dependent on them and not to mention you'll have to live be their rules.

I'm by no means a vet, but what I guess is:

1. Defensible (for example a ridge on one side) is a good thing to have. Means less work with walls.
2. Resources. Close to a good q claynode, has an entrance to a cave, stone, whatever.
3. Well spot, if you're inland?

That's all I can think of at the moment, and I don't know if this is what the vets look for, but judging from the larger pali'd areas around me this is what they have in common.

I've seen two caves in my travelling so far. Both have been littered with skeletons outside. I take that to mean that there was some fighting, and I'm in no shape whatsoever to fight. So that seems like something to look at a bit later, maybe?

As for clay, I'm not totally sure I'd know good clay from bad clay right now with skills such as they are.

This often means someone who lived in, or nearby, the cave wanted it to seem dangerous by making it look like there is conflict. The skeletons are often just ones from the wilderness. I was killed by a bear, and a week later, I saw the skeleton, with a few others, on the outside of a cave. Clearly means they are unlikely to be dangerous. if you want to be ULTRA cautious, just look inside. :)
