Friend's Hearth Fire unlit

My friend was unfortunately swarmed by oxen after he pulled their hair, and when he tried to revive, it didn't teleport him back to his old hearth fire. When I went to check on it, it was just a regular stack of branches! Does anyone know why this happened?

Did he click inherit on the runestone in the character creation room?
