If you use Ender's client you can use "global chat", which is #haven2 on synirc. Usually there are a couple people in it if you want real-time advice.

But yeah to build or craft anything you need both the requisite skills, and you need to have discovered all the materials to create it.

People agree that discovery system isnt very intuitive. Basically you could notice that you can craft stone axe before you take brach from tree and stone from rock but because you do that anyway you dont really notice. Every week or even more often somebody asks something on forum something that is answered by "you need to discover X first".
