Need help! (Combat)

The combat confuses me,about 10 minutes ago i tryed kiling a fox and in 2 hits i was lying in a pool of my own blood...wtf?
So here are the quesstions:
1)What are the blue and red bars on the top of the screen?
2)Which side of the bars is myne the left or the right?
3)Do i have to do an attack manually (by going in the fight icon and selecting a move) or is there an autoattack?
4)I saw somewhere some mm or MM thing so what is that?

red is the % of atack what u can use.
blue is the % of defense what u can use.
ur bars are the left.
the first atack u need click in the character, the rest u can click in the icon of the enemy (top-right)
MM = Markmanship. u need that for atack using range weapons (slings/bows)
