Rustroot and Mining

I'm currently in desperate need of metals because my friends and I are having trouble dealing with enemies and leather won't cut it, so I'm trying to get us metal equipment. Problem is, I tried getting prospecting but I need rustroot. I have 21 perception and 25 exploration, and the wiki said its minimum. I've been wandering for about an hour now in the forest and I've found nothing.

My questions:

1) Whats the best thing to do when looknig for rustroot?

2) What are the basic concepts to know when mining and starting to mine?

1. Get your perc*exp higher, other than that keep looking. You said you've been wandering around for hours I'm surprised you didn't find any unclaimed caves by then.

2. Even if you find a node of ore and you actually get a mine hole built the mine walls could be too hard for you to mine if your strength or tool is really low. If you do make a mine hole mine the center tile to lower cave-in chances. The first thing you should create with the metal you get is nuggets to create a mine supports.

1 - Rustroot became more and more common when I raised my PER*EXP. I must be around 30 PER and 60 EXP and they are everywhere. If you are really looking for some and want to forage consistently then I think you need to raise it at least a bit.

2 - As Zeggy said you might be able to find an abandoned cave / mine hole. I personnaly found two while foraging for rustroot and candleberries, one with iron one with copper.
The thing is if you find a cave or a mine hole, explore it and find where people actually dug and / or put mine supports. That way you can safely gather your first bars of metal.
I'd suggest a good bear cape + beat tooth talisman, and decent amount of STR (20-25 str + the clothes and you should be around 50) and the best stone axe you can craft. Go in mountain biome, dig to find stones, try to find the best one you can (capped by your survival), and find the best branch you can (either grow trees or find an abandoned claim with hand grown trees). It will get you started. Read wiki and sevenless guide too, and you're set.

One last thing, when you are testing walls, if a stone drops at your feet it means there's no ore = no metal in that tile.
