Finding Clay And Clay Nodes

I've had an awful lot of trouble finding clay, not really to sure how nodes work or how i can just dig up a whole metric butload of clay to make stuff.
If someone could explain it would be much appreciated.

To quickly find clay, I'd suggest you go by boat, and every screen dig on the border of the river (in shallow waters) until you get a clay of q>10.

Oh its ok, figured it out.
You have to find a node, so basicly when you dig(my survival is past 10)it will have a higher quality then 10, lets say in this case its 12.
So you walk up and if the quality is higher, your closer to the node, if its lower you will be farther from the node, then you walk back and the quality should increase until a certain point in which you've gotten to the node.
