Apple tree help

Im very new to this game and i keep dying due to lack of food. i was to told to find apple trees but couldn't find any. Eventually i came across an apple tree but when i right clicked on it only the option to cut it down comes up and it clearly has apples on it. I found it next to someones house but it wasn't claimed land. I have been reading many different sources and they all say the option should be there. Please help.

right click trees for options like pick apple

The tree has already had it's apples picked, they show up on the graphics regardless, or it's not fully grown - and it's right click, not left.
I've included a link to the wiki food page, there are plenty of foods for new players, taproot is usually plentiful and will keep you from starving. You need to raise your exploration and perception to see more forageables. :)
