Should a solo player/hermit make a minehole?

Postby Enaragon » Sun Jan 11, 2015 8:21 am

From what I see, mine holes, although resource intensive, seem to require materials that are more or less easily accessible. However, does making a mine hole attract raiders/ griefers?

How long would it typically take a solo player/hermit to make a mine hole and when should said player make a mine hole? After a palisade is up? And is making a mine hole worth it?

A mine hole would only attract visitors if it is not blocked from the top.

Yes, a mine hole should be your next goal after a palisade, so you can get the metals required for a brick wall.

Place with palisade and minehole is more attractive than only palisade. Because you might have cupboards full of wrought.

Maybe make your place large enough so the minehole is not visible from outside.
What you could also do is set up a village idol first to be able to buy metals from other players. Make a brick wall with those and then put your minehole inside that wall. (if you're online every day, you should be able to spot a ram if someone tries to raid you)
Hope you have a great day

If you can't find access to and secure a cave system then, yes.
And also take Krikkes advice.

I thought ender's client can zoom out pretty far and see mine holes inland easily? But thanks for the answers guys. :D Another quick question, if someone were to leave scents behind, and I harvest the scents, do the scents disappear from my inventory after a while or does only the source of the scents disappear?

When the source of the scents dissapear, they will dissapear from your inventory/anywhere else also.
However as time passes the number of charges from the source will go down, but the number of charges from collected scents will remain the same.

Max view distance is 50 tiles, nobody can see further than that.

Many of the palisaded camps I've encountered have been breaching into from their mineholes.
I think the safest bet would be to build it in a separate place, at a safe distance.
Also palisade and claim the minehole.

press CTRL+G (a tile is about 1m x 1m ) - CTRL+L for measuring

in Ender Tools - Highlight Tab you can check to "Show view distance" in minimap - it shows a transparent pinkish rectangle then

here are the "living" times of scents

i recommend try to find an open cave entrance - do some dig test to find a veign (if stone drops no ore)
or build a minehole external from your place and cover it with Palli
