Where would a safe home be?

Postby FrashFrash » Sun Jan 11, 2015 10:02 pm

I have alot of other homes around me at the moment, but they are all abandoned, and I don't have much, the only thing I care about on this character is the lp.
So should I keep walking in one direction untill I stop seeing homes or something?

Find a nice cozy place with a clay node, no neighbours, and a river nearby.
Focus on purchasing metals for a brickwall, then use the clay from your node to construct a brickwall about half a minimap away from the river.
Use boats to navigate the river and find swamps, mountains and other places full of curios and other supplies.
That is about the safest thing you could do alone, as safe as it gets while it doesn't limit your ease of travel, etc.
Don't bother building a palisade, go straight for the brick wall, the wood from the trees nearby can be used for much more useful things later on.

Building a palisade is a good idea for the short term before you can manage to gather enough bricks and or metal to complete a brickwall, you can always build around or inside a palisade if you plan it all out.

I'd build a palisade, it's easy and will protect you from most people (a pro raider will most likely overlook your little camp if it's palisaded, not worth the effort).
Also, make sure your base is deep in land. You shouldn't leave activity signals that could be visible from the river.

if places are abandoned and there are no claims, theres no reason not to build there, or use the remains of the settlements to help you along the journey. When I have newb chars around in the world I always used old settlements, cause often a lot of the building work is semi done! As long as it isn't recent ruins, it's probably not a big deal to use it.

No one area is particularly safe, most people have crossroads to all parts of the world map, so everyone can get to you potentially. There are a few guides of making yourself safe, so basic tips about not building too close to rivers or lakes, not building too close to big active towns, finding nodes, which at this stage in the world is difficult, but a crappy node is better than no nodes at all, and getting a wall up as soon as possible is a must now.

Don't wander too long expecting a safe place, because there really isn't one.

Good luck

Palisades aren't THAT useless, but honestly, for a noob it does require a bit effort and when you manage to build it after all that work, it creates an illusion that you're safe only to be bashed later by a 2500 strength guy when you leave a vandal scent on water accidentally and get summoned.
People forget the importance of brick walls if they build palisades, that's why I think he should simply jump to palisades (early world palisades are a must, but now it's not early world, is it)

If you can find a closed cave system that's open they are also nice places to start out. only one way in and you can always drop a personal claim for some extra security. If you decide to stay in it find the point where you can begin mining and build a brick wall to stop intruders. then you have some time to expand it into however big you decide to mine out and protect.
