Shields enable you to use the Shield combat maneuver, which turns your defense into 125% of your melee combat skill. Otherwise your defense will be based off of your unarmed combat.

Shields give 1.25x your MC worth off UA(as defence) during standing combat, though if hit in movement counts as UA of defence.

Mmm. I'm not a HnH Fighter. But what if your "defense based on unarmed combat" is higher than "125% melee"?

It makes sense to me that in that case the higher of the two is used.
- Which would make a shield of no use when "defense based on unarmed combat" is higher than "125% melee" (if this is not the case, some additional math might be in play here.)

It's a known and reported bug. Even if you have 1 UA vs 100 MC your character will be hit for UA damage when hit moving in the shield stance.

if you def based on UA is higher, you would want to use dodge or oak stance or any of the other maneuvers besides shield. there's no automatic selection based on which is higher, it depends on which stance you pick
