How do I survive an encounter with another heartling?

Postby Sarila » Sun Feb 01, 2015 3:59 am

I have played haven since mid world 6 and so far all my encounters have been peaceful.
These are the three mayor persons I have encountered, all powerful Veterans:

The first man was a Korean with extended knowledge of combat; I met him in world 6. He did not speak English very well and I did not write well either but somehow he managed to teach me some basic maneuvers even with our language barrier. I asked him about survival and the answer he gave me was: "Run, run and hope the other guy forgot his water buckets", he also pressed that I should get 100 unarmed as soon as possible.

The second man was a Russian. I was a just a blue-eyed newbie that had not yet seen the cruelty of a raider; I had no reason to fear this man.
I was out foraging a long the shoreline when he came up with in a boat, he was so amazed by the fact that I didn't panic and run, so he "spared me". The knowledge he passed on to me was: "Befriend someone powerful in the area, and say his name when attacked. It might spare your life"

The third, the boar man, told me to really focus on getting unarmed, around 100-150 was a good milestone before focusing on other things.

Recently I have been out on walkabouts, exploring the area and taking notes. I always keep at least 3 Buckets of q40 water with me. I have not yet been in a fight with someone, could you guys please tell me what I should expect?

How do I handle the situation?
I do not want to kill anyone, just survive the encounter, can I prepare myself somehow?
100 unarmed seems like a good start, are there any other milestones I should reach? (100, 200, 500, 1000)
How much unarmed should a peaceful explorers have at the moment as a minimum?

I am sorry if my post is unreadable.

My advice is this: Avoid factions. AD and DIS are often paranoid of people, and it is best to avoid involvement. Live alone, build your stats, and do not let anyone inside your walls. Always check for rams, and if anyone with purple robes, battle axes or bows outside your wall ask you questions, tell them to leave, then walk out of their range. Make an alt village to port to if things go bad. DO NOT have keys on you main. Always keep keys on alts.

This is a code to live by. "Trust those who DO, not those who SAY."

Staying safe is extremely simple.

1. Carry 3 buckets of q40+ water on you at all times outside (more or less buckets depending on how far you're going).
2. Spend as much time as possible in your boat instead of walking around. When leaving your boat, park it so that it faces south (the way it faces when the map unloads) so passerbys think it's a long abandoned boat.
3. Have a brick wall and a key alt.
4. Know how to swim across a river safely.

Your UA doesn't really matter unless you want to kill them.

In the worst case scenario, where you leave your boat for a bit, and come back to see that it's grounded and you're being chased, just run home. Don't click too often (this literally makes you run slower), don't clip on objects, and pay attention to the minimap for when there will be a cliff ahead. While running, when you have the opportunity to make a really long click with no obstructions in the way, log on your key alt, and have him at the ready. Run inside and close the gate quickly.

In conclusion, it's really easy, and you shouldn't worry about being attacked if you've made a couple very easy preparations.

Oh also, I recommend you try to talk to people and not run instantly. You'll make friends, and if you're practiced, you're in absolutely no danger.

This
If I'm out and about, and I encounter someone, if they run then I chase, always, and try to kill them.
If they attack me then I'll run.
If they hold fast and talk to me then I talk back and we both go home safe and happy.

So in general consensus is it's always safer to talk to someone on the river? Maybe I need to stop hearthing at the sight of anyone!

"clip on objects", is that the same thing as running really close to a object? if so, would that not be optimal for keeping distance?

What I mean by "clipping on an object" is where you click, you start running, and you stop running before you reach your destination because an object is in the way. Therefore you clipped on the object. Just make sure you aren't running into shit because you're panicked or whatever, because then you'll stop moving for way too long and you'll panic even more.

It's easy to use objects to your advantage when running away to cause your pursuers to clip. For instance, if they have queued punch on you and are following you directly (not clicking, just following your exact movement), then you can run to the end of an object (so that it is in between you and your chaser) and change direction slightly (so that they run into it) to force them to click (wasting speed), or if they're poor chasers they will simply clip on the object.
