Sling assistance

I got a sling a while ago
So i was trying to kill an animal and the sling worked for the first time
Then next time i shoot it the meter does not fill up but i shoots and misses and it has been doing that ever since
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong (I have searched everywhere for an answer)

Are you out of stones? Are you waiting for the meter to fill? What's your marksmanship level? What quality is the sling?
