converting ore to iron

Postby niltrias » Sat May 30, 2009 11:58 am

Weve had some trouble with making Iron ore...the ore dissappeared from the smelter with no output! is this a bug, or is there a random chance of getting iron or nothing?
BTW, the smelter was completely full, and we got nothing, so it wasnt just a divide by 2 or 3 problem.

I've noticed this too. At first i thought there was an invisible buffer, but i dismissed that after getting no iron melting animation with no ore inside.

I did notice they mention it working with ods, but they only mentioned 2 could be achieved with believe. So i naturally would assume 1 would be default.

If you ask me too much ore goes wasted like this.

It's not a bug, it's a feature. ;)

There's supposed to be a 1 in 10 chance to get an iron bar from the ore, so you were just unlucky.
It's happened to me too quite a few times and yes, it sucks. :)

Kaka is, of course, right. It could be argued that ore that does not turn into iron should turn into slag or stone or whatever, and not simply disappear.

This one of those things that would work better with a weight system.
ore is 20% iron for example. So 5 of them would make one bar. Random can still be used to influence the weight though.

You already know there's iron inside the ore, so why give it a chance of failing?

Well, technically speaking, it is reasonable to assume that the ore is very heterogeneous in regard to the spatial distribution of ferrous content density, so random failings are not unreasonable, if you ask me.

However, it is worth noting that your setting on the Nature/Industry belief slider affects the ore quality. If you're fully industrially aligned, your ore will be twice as good (and twice as bad if you're fully naturally aligned).

Sounds like it will be impossible to make you change your mind. :)
