what Hardware upgrade would help most?

Postby warrri » Fri Dec 11, 2009 7:52 pm

I'm currently at my parents home, and will be for about 4 weeks, so i have to play at my sister's computer. The problem is that it's way too old.
Amd Athlon XP 2800+ that is only running at 1667mhz because it gets too hot at the original 2083mhz
nvidia geforce 5600 256mb
1gb ddr ram

It used to run Far Cry pretty well back then, but it has its problem with h&h...
I don't want to buy a fully new pc, but i would consider upgrading some things to be able to play okay-ish here.
So what hardware upgrade would bring the most performance for h&h?

Game only needs around 350MB of ram, so you should have enough if you don't run too many background progs.
The graphics card should be able to handle it, the game can run even with the default 8MB driver (albiet incredibly slowly).

I'd say you're DOOMED with that core though, and I don't think you'll be able to even FIND a single core upgrade.
You see a masterful engraving by Blaze. On it is Blaze, bears, boars, and foxes. Blaze is striking down the bears. The boars are screaming. The foxes are in a fetal position. The image relates to the return of Blaze in the late winter of 2009.

Hm, guess i could buy a better fan and try overclocking. No great loss if it breaks :)

the 2800+ is well known for overclocking like a BEAST!
you could get it running at around 2.4~3.0ghz with good cooling.

COoling the problem i guess. With the current cooler the cpu was at 99,5° yesterday when i clocked it to the native 2083mhz instead of the 1667mhz. The chassis doesnt has any external fans that would soak the warm air outside and i cant find any cooler for that mainboard type (socket a).

Air compressor plox :D Just use it at a low pressure to clean the dust.

Also, get sum liquid cooling. Then you can overclock it to even faster speeds.
