How do I get my first piece of string so I can hunt for bone

Postby HerrMansen » Sun Jan 03, 2010 11:52 pm

Allright. So I've found my own little quiet spot in the woodland wilds. I've got the most basic of skills and trying to build a cottage and a dream catcher so I can make another hearthfire - but I can't get ahold of the bone material required for a bonesaw, and I don't know how to get string for a bow so I have a chance against the fleeing rabbits.

Can someone share the easiest way of procuring any of the above all alone out in the wilds without trading? :geek:

For catching rabbits you have to stand right next to them, when they are standing still. Then grab them by rightclicking. Best thing is to wait till they have finished one of their runs, they will hold still for some seconds then.

String you can get from spindly taproots. They are brown and if you cannot see them yet maybe invest some points into exploration.

you must have a 2x2 square free in your inventory in order to pick up a bunny, so make absolutely sure this space is open in your inventory otherwise you'll fail to pick it up.

[edit - in order to get the most out of spindly tap root, increase your survival skill level, since it will improve the quality of the root you get (and thus, bow quality)]

Stand beside a chicken and right click. Get your perception up high enough you see spindly taproot on the ground, its a string.

Ah, gotcha - and a rabbit too. And some of that root. So what do I do with said bunny to ....extract the bone materials needed?

Right click the rabbit, click "wring neck." Then right click the body and select "butcher."

You can do the same thing with chickens. However, it works quite differently with other animals. You have to fight boars, foxes, bears, etc. Then you right click the body and select "skin" to get the hide. Right click again and select "butcher" for the meat and finally right click, pick "collect bones" and you'll have everything.

If you butcher an animal before skinning it, you lose the hide. Which isn't always bad, sometimes you don't want it.

all you need to see spindly taproots is the foraging skill. you might see a few more as your perception and exploration skill increases by a few points but you can definitely find them as soon as you spend the 200 LP in foraging.
