I've had good luck finding tea seeds and poppy seeds in the barren lands -the flat stretches of dirt where nothing grows.
Pumpkins are apparently impossible to find. They don't grow wild being a recent introduction to the game and can only be found in someone's garden. If you encounter any other players you may want to ask if you can trade for them or if they know of a source.
And if you do find a farm that is not under a claim and use it for a source of seeds, it is good manners to harvest only the single square of starter seeds that you need (That will give you two seeds.) It used to be good manners to replant, but that only stands if your farming skill is not way lower than the crop quality -bearing in mind that when you harvest you probably brought it way down. If your farming is 2 and the seeds you harvest are 19 they were probably in the thirties or lower fourties, so harvesting and replanting would thoroughly spoil the crop.
As soon as you can get four straw and have clothmaking make yourself a straw hat. That gives you a farming bonus.
The easiest way to explore is in a boat. You can cruise up and down the rivers looking for the light green splotches that indicate meadow. It is also worth exploring the other types of terrain. For one thing the mottled greeny-blue blotches on the mini-map that indicate marsh are a source of leeches, and until you have either flax or hemp cultivation and can make bandages, leeches are your only source of healing... and then can be used as fish bait.
