My Newbie

Postby Xankara98 » Mon Jan 18, 2010 7:06 am

Really, he was dumb. Too dumb to continue living, so I made him attack a boar hoping he would use the axe in his hand instead of punching the stupid thing. He did not, and was gored. How are you supposed to play this game at the start? Just abandon your hearth fire and fast travel to the start village? Or is it possible to make a living with your character, alone in the woods?

A few quick questions then, as the wiki is useless to me (cant find anything);

1. How do I log out/ delete newbie characters dying from gore wounds?
2. Should I go to the starter village or hope for the best out in the wilderness?
3. Is the Militia ability (the next combat skill after the unarmed combat skill) when I can actually use a axe to hunt? What does the hunting skill give me, it has no text in its description.
4. How can I store water into the bark cups you can make? Generally any storing things into over things would be helpful.

I'm sorry if these questions have been asked a billion times, feel free to just direct me towards the starter village. But I would appreciate if you answered me.

1. you can log out by closing the window, or by typing :lo into the main window (not in chat)
2. you can definitely have a good experience in the wilderness. you might enjoy the more social aspects of the village though.
3. militia training allows you to use axes and swords. the hunting ability allows you to grab rabbits and chickens by standing next to them and right clicking them. it allows opens up unarmed combat, iirc, which would allow you to punch things. you might want to raise your unarmed stat to 5 though, and don't attack boars, deer, or foxes for quite some time. for now (after you get 5 points in combat skill i mean) you can fight ants, and raid their anthills and eat them afterward.
4. store water in a cup by left clicking the cup and right clicking the river or lake or well. there is a slight delay on wells.

you should definitely invest in the foraging skill if you'r going to be in the wilderness. you can find and eat spindly taproot and blueberries in the forest.

Thank you for your contribution, its made some things clearer. But now I have a annoying bug or glitch occurring.

I made a different character, and found myself surrounded by Fir tree's which I can use to build a bed and a leanto together. Only problem is, the bed can't be built underneath the leanto and the leanto cant be built over the bed. I select the build option for each, and all my character does is walk to build and stop in front of the bed/leanto. I've also tried building the bed in front of the leanto, but no special combination occured either.

Am I building in the wrong spot, does it need special conditions? Or is this just a annoying bug?

You need to build them seperately. Such as, first build the leanto...then walk a few steps away from it and build the bed on the ground, Once you have finished the bed, then use the LIFT command (it's in the adventure menu) to lift the bed and right click on the leanto after you have the bed lifted. This will place the bed in the leanto and you can then go to sleep safely in it.

Thank you so much, I was worried that my character had to sleep on the ground or not at all.

I slept on the ground too. Totally didn't think to lift and drop the bed in the lean-to. I tried to build them in one another/on one another also.

Who's Josan? Anyway, I'd think being able to make a leafy bed is more realistic than being able to make a big log cabin without any help in the wilderness, but being unable to go to sleep (I really did that) seems strange to say the least.

Now, MORE QUESTION TIME.

1. My character is now to travel weary to go anywhere, yet I cant build a bed, not even a leafy leanto bed. I need straw and cows hide. But do I really need cow hide, because I've used rabbit hide and its worked on cloaks so far.

2. Finding straw. I know I need to grow wheat and harvest it, but so far I've only noticed several apple trees (that have infinite apples) and found these yellow area's that look like marshes or swamps. Is my best bet to just wander miles and miles until I find it? What does wheat look like? Should I use a world map?

3. Speaking of world maps, where am I? How can I find out? Should I just try until I match my area with similar spots on the giant world static maps?

Thank you for your help so far, I appreciate every bite of it, and I will take your advice and watch out for Josan.

A boar or deer hide will work for any (to my knowledge) recipe that calls for a "cow hide" but a rabbit hide will not.
