Cow Info Red Bar

Id first like to thank Lothaudus for the cow taming guide he gave me so that i could get a cow in the first place. Moving on. I recently tamed a cow. I have it penned with grass and a trough full of food. Today (the day after i tamed it) i realized that the red bar in the cow info went down. What does this mean? What am i doing wrong?

It's the hunger bar. Don't worry about it not being full, cows won't eat until they get a certain amount of hunger.
