You have to use Pacho's client for it. Just press ctrl+O to get an options menu, where you can disable the sound.

either that, or use windows volume mixer, you can mute specific programs running on your pc. It may be listed as java or haven, not sure. (dont think XP has this option though)

It's possible in the default client as well. Just type ":sfxvol 0". There's no way to adjust the music volume yet, though.
