How many calves can a cow feed?

Postby Potjeh » Wed Jan 20, 2010 2:20 am

OK, when the livestocks' food requirements were lowered, it obviously applied to calves/lambs as well. I have four lambs being fed by just two sheep, and their wellfedness bars haven't taken a hit. I don't really want to experiment and ruin my calves, so can I get a definite answer on how much milk a calf actually requires?

Well we had three cows and three calves, we milked two cows, they gave ~18 liters of milk and the calves didn't get hunger hits so I think one cow could have enough milk for three calves.

Follow up question on calves, that I believe have been answered elsewhere:
Can calves telefeed through fences just as other livestock do?

Also, how about two small icons in the INFO screen, on pregnancy/lactating status?

We've got a single cow. She's a basic tamed cow with all stats at 10. She now has 3 calves. Gave birth to the 3d about 12 hours ago. I just checked them, all 3 are still well fed after 12 hours.
When she had 1 calf, I could milk her for 7.something liters a day, without the calf getting hungry.
When she had 2 calves, I could milk her for 3.4 liters a day, without the calves getting hungry.
Now she has 3 calves, I don't milk her anymore for now.

It strikes me that I probably didn't think of the calves when I adjusted the food requirements. Currently, the calves want only 2/3 dl of milk each in-game hour.

Please keep it like this. If a cow can feed three calves, it can give birth continuously, which makes meat industry viable.

Defenitly If i can milk all but one cow per 3 claves it seems that i could have a good meat production and milk production without the one week wait.

I might argue that that should primarily be possible by breeding a cow who gives such quantities of milk, though. :)

3 is also the natural max number of calves a single cow can have at the same time. The 1st will grow up before the 4th is born.
I second keeping it like this.

I might argue you should wait to do this until GvG defensive measures are available to make doing so viable.
