Survival course 101 failed totally?

Postby racer » Wed Jan 20, 2010 5:36 pm

Alright, I'm a newbie. Started this game like 3 days ago, been playing it somewhat. Been looking at guides, here on the forums etc. Been collecting a few thousand LP but thanks to the retarded search function in this forum I have to ask:

How in the FUC... HELL DO I GET FOOD? Yes. Seriously. That is my question.

Foraging you say? I can't find no goddamn mushrooms or whatever to eat? All I do now is hang around some fucking apple tree in town (bogor, bodor? whatever) and collect LP all time. The fuck is this. I want to be able to go and build stuff in the woods, but if I make a character and start of in the wilderness all I do is starve to death sooner or later.

And what's the deal with the towns? ctrl+b just says "you're alone in this world". Numberous exploration 'quests' I've been on for hours (literally speaking yes) makes no sense. All that happens is that I find some apple tree along the way, rest up, explore some more till I run out of food and have to get my ass back to the last "savepoint". Are there NO people in this game? Can I go somewhere (enter heart secret?) or what's the deal. I gave it a shot on my own but for the love of god I'm so furious right now. Tell me what the fuck I can do to keep living and atleast SOMEWHERE meet someone.

TY for fast answers.

The beloved newbie -> out

if you spawn in the wilderness you can buy the foraging, hunting, and fishing skills to get a steady supply of food.

get foraging first, you should be able to see spindly taproot (you can eat them and use them as string) and blueberries with starting stats but you'll see them more if you put a few points into exploration. you'll see mushrooms a little later, i'm not sure what level of exploration you'll need to see them.

you need hunting next, this will let you walk up to a rabbit and right click it to pick it up. you need a 2x2 empty space in your inventory. rabbits provide 1 meat, roast it over a fire. use the bone to make fish hooks. dry the hide on a rack to make lots of useful things.

with the starting fishing rod, or if you threw it away, two branches makes a new one, a spindly taproot for a string, and rabbit bone hook and some kind of lure or bait (you'll need lumberjacking and possibly carpentry to make woodfish, you'll need pottery to dig for worms, if you find a green swamp you can get leeches, i think you can make a rock lobster right off the bat though) you can get a steady supply of food from any lake or river.

later on you can get plant lore and farming to harvest the wild crops. wild onions make a good munch if they are under q10. over q10 you'll get black fep (do not want). anyway look around for crops, explore, build yourself a lean to at your base camp, you get unlimited teleports back to your hearthfire so just pick a direction and walk, look for goodies, and teleport back to base when your inventory gets full.

good luck. if you see a bear, run in the other direction. everything else is harmless if you don't attack it.

ok like i suggested in the suggestion forums, they need to fix food and hunger, seriously big time;

ok, im editing here because i got distracted cause i lost connection to server.

the #1 best way to get yourself fed while wandering around and basic starting crap, with no skills like you probably have. i suggest you get your survival skill to atleast 10, and pick up random rabbits/chicken and snap their necks + skin then cook their meat.

do not try fishing as the stat gain is useless, your rod breaks, it takes forever, and you barely gain any LP over the time you are fishing.

the #2 skill to get up (1st being survival) is to get carpentry, get that to 10 atleast before wandering into the forest alone.

so far the biggest time waster was finding food 99% of the time, so i suggest you stick near that tree until you are more than ready to go out. like the wiki states, the best way to get LP fast is to get all the way to mechanics skill, and make looms just create the branches part of making a loom, and you get 600~ lp per one.

If you find a grassland, you're set. They have fruit trees and they spawn chickens, which come in big flocks, fill a lot of hunger and give dex fep (you can never have too much dex).

i found that chicken barely gives any hunger in return, atleast at lower levels. with 10 survival they fill at most 20%. rabbits will fill almost 50 to 60% of each bar, also chickens end up filling your inv with useless feathers and bone, rabbits you atleast get leather

Quality doesn't influence the amount of hunger that food fills, it's just for FEPs. All meat fills 40% of a full or hungry bar. Very hungry and starving are bigger, so you get less % on them when you eat.

from what ive experienced that is not the case, ive had to fill up my inv completely of dead chickens to get full, where it takes 3 at most of rabbits to fill up, and i've had times where i had roasted chicken after roasted rabbit and seen the difference

As Potjeh noted, however, rabbits don't provide dexterity.

indeed it is the case and you are not reading what he said properly. The margins of yellow and green are smaller then red and dark red. IOW, it takes more food to fill up a full red bar than a yellow or green bar.

i think you're a fucking idiot and you should go get shot,

you guys are talking about agility when this guy is just trying to survive out in the woods alone, it is not viable to live off chickens because they barely fill your hunger bar. simple fact. rabbits fill it more, if you are too stupid to realize this after the amount of time you've been playing i can make a video to prove it and compare the size of hunger difference you gain off chickens and off rabbits.
