Issues with planting trees.

So I'm pretty much a noob, I've only been playing for a little while, and there's something that is stumping me at the moment.

My character started off in the type of zone that is covered in Fir trees. Now this is fine, but it's not as good as the type of zone that has apple trees all over the damn place. I traveled on my boat and found where they're at but it's quite a trip. I brought back a bunch of apples and I put lots of effort getting the appropriate skills to be able to plant my own trees. When I finally have a sproutling apple tree, I try to plant it back near my home (the area that has all the Fir trees) but it's not letting me! I left click it in my inventory then right click the place I want to plant it but I'm not getting any option to plant.

So my questions are, am I doing something wrong? Am I missing some type of skill to be able to plant the sproutling? Or maybe I can't plant apple trees in the climate that my home is at? Everywhere I read it appears as though that doesn't matter.

If I can't plant the apple tree by my home because of the climate then it appears the prime real estate would be somewhere on the border where fir trees stop and apple/birch/etc. trees begin, right?

You should be able to plant an apple tree anywhere that trees will grow, and you should be able to do it by left clicking the sprouted tree and then right clicking the ground. It sounds like you are not doing anything wrong. I'm mystified as to why this isn't working. The only thing I can suggest is fiddling around with it a bit more -which you do need to do, and soon, because the tree seedling in the pot will die after awhile if it isn't in the ground.

Make sure you plant it where it has room to grow and spread out or it will stop growing while immature.

I find it hard to believe you read my whole post, and/or that whole wiki article, but thanks anyway.

I think I figured it out... the only other skill that I could think of that would have a remote connection to my ability to plant a tree was lumberjacking. I didn't get it because I'm playing with my girlfriend and I thought she would be able to spend her time and LP lumberjacking since she had the skill.

I figured 200 LP wasn't much to test it out, after I got it, it worked.

I think I'll edit that article so others don't have to be confused like me, heh.

If you are doing as you say, the tree should be planting correctly as like the above poster said, you arent doing anything wrong. You have the sprouted apple tree right? You've made the tree pot, added dirt, water and the apple core? Placed it on herbalist table until it sprouts? Then as you say, you left click it, hold it, pick a spot and right click the sprouted tree and it should plant wherever you want it. If you are doing this you should be getting it planted. Be sure you are following all steps and keep trying.

Yeah I've run into errors like that on my alts. One time it was something like me try to make a bandage on the Loom with first aid but not having the skill that allowed interaction with looms, so clicking it wasnt giving any feedback.

It'd help if the game gave information on this sort of thing in the Messages window. "You need such and such skill to use this item." And so on.
