I can't figure this out, I can't even figure out how to make string out of the Taproots, a little help would be appreciated.

You need the fishing skill first. It costs 200lp

If you have that you need fishing line (your spindly taproot is great for this), a hook and a lure.

Left click on the taproot and then right click on the top box of the fishing pole. The fishing pole can be in inventory or in equipment when you do this. It doesn't matter.

To get the bone for a hook you may need hunting and then to catch a rabbit. To catch a rabbit, wait until it stops moving, then left click it and when you stop moving right click it.

To craft the bone into a hook is the same as other crafts, with the bone in your inventory, using the craft menu. Put it on the fishing pole the same way you put the line on.

If you live near a leech marsh, leeches are excellent bait. Failing that you need to make a lure. You can use worms but will expend too much stamina digging them to get it back with the fish you catch. If you live near both birch trees and fir trees a pine cone plug is the next easiest form of lure to use. Failing that make a rock lobster out of a stone chipped from a boulder, or make a wood fish from a block of wood. You need the carpentry skill to make the fish.

Bait always catches something and is used up. Lures don't always catch anything.

You may have to experiment with clicking the water to get the right spot once your fishing pole is fully equipped.

You can fish in the shallow water around the lake and will get different fish there than you do in the deep water.
