Seeds. Don't forget to leave a square below each hen for eggs.
If you cannot command, then you must obey.

any seed, left click a seed in your inventory then right click the coop, or shift + right click for semi-auto mode

Make sure you are left clicking the seed and right clicking the coop. If that doesn't work, right click the coop (after putting the seeds back) and see if there's a full orange bar. If so, they've got all the food they can hold right now.
