Coop efficiency

Postby Potjeh » Wed Feb 03, 2010 2:23 pm

As you know, hens only lay eggs in the four slots directly beneath them, so they need at least one of those slots empty. This makes it hard to arrange them in an efficient manner. The best I've managed is fitting ten hens plus one cock. Anyone has a more efficient layout? For reference, this is how I did it:

I hate you guys for giving coop inventory these dimensions :x

Every layout I make feels like a gigantic waste of space. Sure, I could use extra room for hatching eggs, but when the hell will I have ten hatch-worthy eggs per coop? Coops are by far the least efficient part of my farm.

*edit*
Actually, now that I think of it, this layout is perfect if you're hatching all the eggs. You get ten slots for new eggs, and ten slots for eggs set for hatching. It takes same time for eggs to be laid as it takes them to hatch, so it works out nice if you move hatched chicks into a broiler coop right away.

I still can't come up with a layout for an egg-producing coop, though :(

While the perfectionist in me does, of course, agree with you in the frustration that it's impossible to find that one, single optimum layout, I think this is precisely what makes it interesting. It wouldn't be a game if the perfect layout were obvious, would it? :)

For the record, I am infatuated by the symmetry of your layout. :)

Lol. My friend and I had almost the same layout (without the cock). We were unsure if ever every chicken would lay eggs without 2 spaces below, so we went back to the 8 squares/hen.
