Where am i?

Postby malaki » Sat Feb 06, 2010 2:27 am

Hey Im new to the game, I started lat night, but I got stuck in and have a few skills including yeomanry and the construction/mining skills and various other ones. I started in some woodland-esque place and decided to migrate south. I found some other unclaimed lands, blocked off by palisades and decided I should claim a land near them and build near them, so that maybe we could become neighbours and look out for one another (although I havent seen any sign of either of the 2 settlement owners yet, also the fact its unclaimed is a bit odd dont ya think??)

Anyway, what I really wanna know is....where am I? At the start I remember climbing a ladder and being offered some starting points, to which I picked one at random and honestly cant remember which I picked now! Is there a way to tell? Also, the map is a tiny little minimap in the bottom left corner...I was wondering...is there a larger version to view in game? If so...how do I view it? Do I need cartography?

Furthermore..is there a way to identify villages/cities on the map?

Help! I really am loving this game though, big shout out to the development team!!!

It's a bit hard to tell where you are from your description. There is no map. There was one original center grid and there is a map of that. However there are 25 other grids surrounding it and they don't have maps at all. You might actually be on the center map still if you went down a trapdoor. Was there a big white monolith where you ended up first of all? I think there are only a few charterstones that are open: Brodgar Mine, Brodgar, Novigrad are three. Lake Russaria is another one but it might well be closed by now.

If you went up the ladder you should have had no choices at all. You would have spawned at random. That doesn't rule out landing near another settlement.

Is there a village in the area? A village has an idol and appears on the minimap as a kind of goat like red skull face. If you can find a village enter it and try to interact with anything in the village influence radius. You should get a message telling you "that land belongs to...." and the name of the village, instead of being able to interact with whatever you clicked on. Give us the village name and we can probably hazard a guess where you are.

Also, what type of trees are there in your woodland-esque place? Are they all fir trees, or is there a range of them. There are no trees you can interact with at Brodgar, so it is safe to guess that if you were able to take a branch from any of them you are not at Brodgar.

The fact that there are no claims on the area doesn't come as a surprise. The players who built the pallisade may have moved on or they may be using their claims elsewhere to safeguard other property. The question that springs to mind is how good a state or repair is their property in? If the pallisades are turning pink and have gaps and if the fields are losing all sign of ploughing under the crops there is a good chance they have abandoned the place. Did they leave hearth fires? Does the place look pillaged? You can make some educated guesses from that.

Cartography will allow you to make a map of the area you are in but it doesn't put any labels on the map, just puts a collection of many minimap sized areas on one large map, on a piece of parchment. This can be helpful for getting the lay of the land but you generally get that anyway as you go around doing the mapping.

Thanks for the indepth reply mate, very insightful! :)

If I remember rightly, I clicked on something at the start that allowed me a choice of places to enter- I selected one and it was rather wasteland-ish, so I decided I wanted to go somewhere more beautiful lol, and I think I chose the "second one down?" Either way, at the start there was a big red goat head on the mini map, but I didn't think anything of it so I moved south for about 10/15 minutes until I couldn't move anymore due to a river closing me off.

One of the settlements is quite large, and has palisade all the way around, but you are right- there are a few strange gaps in the wall, and the garden is in a state of disrepair. There is a stoneward message thing that says whos land it is (Kiril), and I will get very badly bruised if I touch anything lol, so I have stayed well away from his house haha.

The tree's around the start were a mixture of apple and fern, but as I migrated south along the rivers, I found different variants of trees like birch, one beginning with S, mulberry, and now where I live, is just a LOAD of fern trees and nothing other. There also isn't much wildlife like rabbits, chickens, boars :(

One more question, what skill is required to craft a boat?

Cheers again!

You can find out where you landed in relation to the center of the world by kinning an alt on another account (or a friend) currently at the Ring of Brogdar with the "kin by hearth secret" command in the Kin window, then forming a party with them in the same window. Their arrow will show up on your screen.

hey i used a series of maps on H&H wiki to find where I am (was surprisingly easy!) I am isolated, but relatively near a "bandit camp?"

If you use this link: http://www.maplib.net/map.php?id=6075

You can see on the map there is a "bandit camp" on the west side of the map (use the key). Now if you take that camp and view the river adjacent and to the east of the camp, then follow the river south as far as possible- I'm there!

So what I want to know basically is...how do I tell if these "bandits" are friendly? If they are, how do I join their village?

Also...is anyone near me and willing to team up?
