...chop down a tree? I have a stone ax equipped and right clicking a tree just brings up the take branch/bough/cone/bark options. I feel its something really simple, but I'm just overlooking it somehow.

Very misleading. Yes. I remember thinking, "faster? you can't chop down trees without lumberjacking at all...."

Possible the dev's could take note for a minor edit?

yea i remember when i couldent cut down trees either and the lumberjaking thing saying faster did mislead me but i baught it early just to have it and went "well atleast i didnt have to ask the fourms." lol.
