Are there other people?

It says "You are alone in the world" in my message thing, but sometimes I see trees cut down and other signs of humanity.
Are they real people, or just the game?

There are other people that are playing.
I think that just means you have no one remembered or i guess on your friends list.
(can someone confirm this?)

That's right. "You are alone in the world" means that you have no family on your kin list, and you have no neighbours that you have seen and would recognize.

The world is immense in this game, and thinly populated. If you have friends playing you can become kin using your hearth secrets, and then chat in game no matter how far apart you are.

Sooner or later you are going to see someone. When you do, right click on them and it will bring up the option to memorize them so you recognize them the next time you see them. I imagine you will want to talk to them. Area chat means anyone can hear what you say. You'll also have a personal chat option, just between the two of you. Later you might become friends and throw your lot in together and then you can become kin.

I finally found a village-ish area

Basically if you are in a forest area, you are unlikely to find anyone due to poor source of food. Been there done that, i moved to a green area today, took 10minutes to walk their, still rebuilding my camp atm.

Now if you move to grass land (lime green) you will find alot more people.
If you go by rivers there are more signs of life there too.

Actually, I'm in a grass area currently, and its close to a river. I guess there are some people, I found a plot of hemp and got some seeds from it.
