Anyone know how to use this attack, I assume its used to tame animals(from the name) but can never seem to be able to use it. Any special items you need or anything like that?

And also, are bears allowed to come near your hearth fire? I logged in today and got mauled by one...

Bears can go anywhere (except through walls)

Right now you can only tame the wild cows and sheep. It's a complicated, long process that will usually result in you getting your arse kicked if you're a newer guy. If you're able to get your hands on some metal armor that will go a long way towards making taming easier. Look up "Animal Husbandry" on the wiki to read more detail about taming.

As a related question: Once you have a cow/sheep, do you have to build something to contain them or will they loyally remain in the same general location?

Do they actually do damage to you? I looked up taming in the wiki and I have all of the items it requires(rope, Animal Husbandry, and armor(clogs))

Uhh, when it says armour it doesn't mean its a requirement. It means it's a very good idea, they hit pretty hard. You have to get full combat advantage in melee, which means you have to be beating them.

Can you just lower their health with a ranged weapon, and later go into melee?
