Let there be Light!

Postby kobnach » Tue Jun 16, 2009 5:49 pm

OK, another newb question. It's dark right now, and I'd love to play. But - torches give little light, campfires don't let me move far from them. Ditto the hearth fire. What other options are three? (I read about mining helmets in one thread. What do I need to make one? Do they give better light than torches?)

Also, my torch just went out, leaving me stranded - and somehow unable to move. (I had been hunting rabbits. This could have been a lot worse if I'd been hunting something that fights back.) Maybe there were lots of obstacles, maybe one just cannot move in pitch black, maybe I was moving but not getting into a lighted area, so no screen redraw. I logged out (killed the window) to get back to my herarh fire - but is there any way to tell how much time is left on a torch?

Together with using light sources, change your monitor and/or graphics card settings :) It seems a bit lame, but at my usual settings the game is kinda dark even during the day, and almost pitch black at night, and I think it's supposed to be possible to see things outside in the dark to some extent, because if it wasn't then it would be like mines where anything that isn't lit is pure black.

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

No, actually, you can move around in the dark, and there aren't any grues, you were just running into things. Torches last a long time if you don't keep them lit for long. Keep them lit just long enough to get wood to make campfires and use those to light your way. (I also have my monitor's brightness/contrast set to be dark normally, but change it to normal during the night - if I left it at my dark settings, I couldn't see much of anything in mines or at night even with torches, campfires, etc)

I actually just figured this out (days ago) but the darkness varies daily. One day it might be pitch black while the other is pretty bright.
I remember when i first spawned into the world it was pitch black. I thought it was still loading
The ones who see things differently.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

It has to do with the moon cycle. :)
