It says on the wiki that i can get sand from beach tiles. How do i know if it's a beach tile or not? And do i always get sand or do i sometimes get clay too?
It should be pretty obvious. Beach tiles look like sand, yellowish, only shows up around the edge of water. As best as I can remember, it only produces sand.

are beach tiles rare? i'm looking for sand as well and can't remember ever seeing any beach tiles... but maybe i just wasn't paying attention to them at the time?
Well, IF you find a beachtile you will definatly recognize it. Looks like "sand" on the minimap and on the ground too. If you cant tell if a tile is beach or not - it probably is not beach.
It shows up on the minimap as a narrow white rim around the lake's edge and sometimes on the rims of rivers that make short loops out of the lake and back. Lots of lakes don't have sand. Only one of the lakes near me does have it.
I have the same problem, NONE of the lakes (if a lake is a very large mass of water, I'm not exactly sure what constitutes as a "lake" in this game) around me have sand. I traveled for over an hour in both directions of my hearth and found nothing.
