1: To a noob, the words "grid", "tier", or "supergrid" don't really mean anything. The only thing I have yet found out about the map is that it's huge. But where one grid ends and another one begins, I do not know. Supergrid is most likely the square of the map that is released to the public (see link). What a Tier is, remains a complete mystery to most new players.
3: Isn't there way to fast-travel/teleport to a village that is close to the rim? I'm quite new and haven't yet figured out how this works, so that's just a thought.
The center supergrid is the map that you have been given. There is another ring of supergrids around this map comprising eight more supergrids, which is called the first tier. Then there is another ring of supergrids around that which is the second grid and finally a third ring of supergrids which is the third tier. The third tier is very new. It was generated about a week ago. That means that everyone who had settled as far out as they could used to be right up against an invisible wall which has vanished, and they now have a lot of territory beyond them.
You can't really tell where one supergrid begins and another one ends. I think that each map is land locked so you can never reach other one without portaging, but I have never been able to confirm this. Certainly if you look at the map of the original supergrid you see that none of the water goes to the rim of the map and you have to walk to leave that. I'm not sure how the word grid is used. I think it is used loosely, sometimes to mean the territory of a minimap and sometimes the territory of a supergrid, usually a supergrid.
There is no way to teleport out to the rim. The rim is going to expand again, I suspect, and there has not been time for anyone to establish a village and a network of crossroads that far. Or if they have, they moved darned fast and are keeping the crossroads private.
Villages can create crossroads in their own territory which link to the crossroads in other villages, if the two lawspeakers trade share signposts. Crossroads have to be placed within a village's territory and are often enclosed in a wall and so only accessible to village members. However anyone can use a crossroads if they can right click on it. The catch is that you need high agility to teleport any distance.
I'll give a made up example. You are in the town of Stepford, inside the wall. You don't have a key to get out. If you click on the crossroad you see the following choices: Stepford Water 10%, Stepford Mine 78%, Noobie Village 211%, Gold Mine 115%
The first choice, Stepford Water is a crossroad probably placed within the village radius but outside of the wall. It's the way you get out of the village without a key. And most likely if you click on it there are no signposts on the Stepford Water crossroad. You can't use it to travel anywhere. It is only used for getting out of the village. If your buddy clicks on the signposts in the village he will get different %'s because his agility is not identical to yours. In this case you can get to Stepford Mine because it only uses up 78% of your travel weariness, but you can't get to the other two locations because they use up more than 100% of your maximum travel weariness. To get to those you need to increase your agility. And of course if you are at 50% travel weariness you can't teleport to Stepford Mines either because you only have 50% left. You have to drink beer or sleep in a bed to get rid of some of your travel weariness first.
