Archery assistance

I cant seem to find ANYWHERE an explanation of how to do archery. I know how to shoot the arrows, but before I do a bar with a target comes up. I've tried waiting for it to raise or clicking it and neither does anything, I just click the animal again and fire a shot which always misses. I have only tried shooting frogs and bunnies but have missed every time. Any help would be great :D

Moderas, it seems you have low quality bow and/or arrows and/or low MM skill.
Well... Use a sling =]
