How use chop

I equipped an stone axe, and tried to chop at an ant, but I can't do it...Supposedly I need 4 golden coin looking thing or whatever that icon represents. Can someone please tell me what the icons mean?

there's the round coin (intensity?)
swords (initiative?)
shield
balance (combat advantage?)

I was fighint this ant, and all I can do is punch and miss since I didn't train unarmed. I have 8 melee but I can't use chop as an attack. I gained 1 coin by punching, and supposedly I need 4 coins to chop, so does that mean I have to raise my unarmed to punch to start off and chop when intensity get to 4. This is all based on my guesses, so PLEASE help me by identifying the icons and how I fight. Thanks!

You need to use the combat moves charge and dash to get initiative tokens (coins).

You won't do damage unless you raise your attack power (red bar) by using charge and jump.

Another question, should I raise unarmed because I'll be like jumping around for a sometime b4 I get 4 initiative. Is unarmed combat useful for a melee soldier?

I'm pretty sure skill level doesn't effect jump, charge and dash. They restore a fixed percentage of your attack/defense bars. Unarmed does effect dodge if your not using a shield.
