The fourth tab on the character sheet screen shows you what items your ancestors want. They are very picky. They want the item on the left and only the item on the left but will grudgingly accept the two items on the right without getting mad at you.
If you successfully give your ancestors what they want for long enough they give you numen points. Don't forfeit or your ancestors will toss half the numen points you have saved up. You gain numen points more easily if you are full tradition than if you are full change. You can save up your numen points to get simple spells... prayer of a lost child to obtain a map, another one gives you a loaf of bread, a third one gives you a little temporary light in the darkness. And then of course there is einerjacketawhatwhosit which raises all your combat skills temporarily to 1000 skill points, occassionally useful when massacring a hapless village of not-quite so strong farmers who only have combat stats of 300 or so.
(Please note I did not check the spelling on the spell name but you can get the general idea from the approximation I used.)
