Hunting - Melee or Ranged

What would you recommend for hunting, melee (axe and shield), or ranged (sling/bow).

I heard bow is hard to hit with but does more damage, sling is a good starter

Is melee any good, are the animals to strong for it to be worthwhile in hunting?
melee needs points in unarmed aswell to dodge, does this make melee weaker?
