How long does it take for tree to regenerate?

I'm told that they regenerate on the same cycle as the decay, which means they might just be hit in a couple of hours but are more likely to take several days and it might be essentially never.

I'm finding myself in fairly serious competition for resources. Apple trees and nut trees almost never have any fruit left, and frequent patches of branchless areas mean if I want to have a fire to cook meat I need to move on another minimap. I've had to keep moving in order to find new spawns of foraging plants and animals. With that being the case, what I see is slash and burn foraging being a reasonable path for survival, albeit a destructive one. Can anyone tell me any advantage to not cutting trees in the areas I don't expect to return? I've yet to find an area with enough resources to look viable for settling down.

Keep traveling and only settle down when logging off. Forage and possibly hunt for food, cut trees for lp.

Any time I try and settle down I run out of resources so I end up moving on. I could just stand by a riverbank and fish if I wanted to stay in one place, but there is still no advantage yet that I can find to having a base. The disadvantage is that I run out of resources quickly and end up living on a very limited diet, of nothing more than brill or perch.

My discomfort is that I am chopping down a LOT of trees.

You'll eventually want to settle down in some area, unless you don't like to own things and would rather live the life of a wanderer, which can be pretty boring. If you're lucky and you find an area of land far away from the nearest hearthling, resources are not a problem. I live in a nice area by myself. This is my daily routine:

1. Log in.
2. Step outside of my Log Cabin and survey my surroundings.
3. Pick any roots, berries, etc. I see and store them for later use.
4. Check my hunger bar. If I'm hungry, I go to step 4a. If I'm not, step 4b.
4a. Take a walk to the closest hearthland, collecting edibles as I go. Once I arrive, I search for the nearest chickens and butcher them for meat, then return home.
Cook the meat, eat until I'm full, then store the rest for later.
4b. I continue work on my village, building houses/walls/tools until I'm hungry. If I have nothing to eat in storage, I go back to step 4a.

Taking into account that the closest hearthland (the purple field) is about a 6 minute walk, whenever I need to go there all the forageable stuff has respawned. If I don't want to walk to the hearthland, I take another walk to the river and fish, but only at night. It seems you can catch better fish at night, like eel and pike.

This becomes the daily routine for me until I find some wheat seeds. With wheat seeds, I will be able to make straw, and with the straw, I will be able to build a chicken coop, thus I will become self-sufficient and will never have to worry about food ever again.

If you're in need of a place to go, I offer you a spot in my soon-to-be village's residency. I am currently making houses so people who show up have a place to call their own right off the bat. Just send me a private message and we can discuss things further, even other questions you might have.
