Umm how does one get it...perhaps i am retarded and i missed a basic obvious sign lol...i dont know

That's kind of a problem we have with the UI right now. String is actually a kind of "meta-item"; you can use either yarn or plant fibers. It's just that we have no good way to illustrate that.

I am still confused about this. what skill do you need or what tool do you use to actually make it?

Plant fibers can be acquired by harvesting either hemp or flax (Requires Farming). Yarn by spinning wool that you can get from sheep (Requires clothmaking). Both yarn and plant fibers are considered to be "String". There is no actual "String" item. "String" is an abstract item class. And, as loftar said, we know we should be more clear about this. GL!
