NotSo-Natural selection

Postby UnrealJake » Sun Mar 14, 2010 3:31 pm

Is it worth it? I have to work a big farm for the village I am in, and it takes a long time to harvest, pick, and plant crops, and that's just the carrots. I end up unable to harvest everything and I'm pretty sure the hops haven't been touched for over a week now, even with two farmers. I wanted to know, is selecting the seeds realy worth it? I guess at the beginning it's much more important than later on but I need to know just how big a part it plays in farming before I scrap it completely...

Any other tips for a farm would be a great help as well, I need to support roughly half a dozen people...

For feeding 6 people I would definitely have more than 2 farmers, especially if the crops aren't getting done. I suggest planting only the best seeds to improve crop quality but take note that the quality of foods (carrots, bread etc) does not affect how much hunger they fill, only the FEPs you get from them. So if you don't care about the stats I guess you wouldn't have to worry about quality.

Also look at the total amount of crops you have and figure out what you're using and what you aren't (ie "do I really need 24 tiles of hops and 30 tiles of poppies?") If you're not regularly using a particular crop, tone it down to 4-6 tiles and just harvest it to work on quality. If you're full nature it won't be too hard to spread that crop later.

Carrots and grapes are great for the stats they provide but not an efficient way to really feed a group. For feeding a lot of people, wheat is the moneymaker, we have a 96 tile wheat field and it only takes me 15-20 minutes to harvest, select, replant, make flour and then dough, that's 96 baked goods which last a decent while around here. So it sounds to me like you're trying to farm too much stuff. Or maybe farming isn't really your thing

Hmm, the carrots are only for some of out members who were trying to get perception up to get rustroot, now that one of them is probably a good three super grids away in his quest for metal, and the rest just happy with the mine we have.

Our town managed to trade for a scythe so things are allot faster now, the only problem realy is placing the seeds when my inventory is full, I'm trying to get chests around my farm for temporary storage but, nobody has made any yet...

I fell into the farm realy, the previous owner met an untimely end when exploring and didn't want to come back, so It left me, the only person with any farming, to handle the reigns, I kinda regret it but I am getting used to it, and we are trying to find more farmer as well. Cheers though, I will probably cut back on the carrots.

Oh yeah and if you have pumpkins, those are great as a quick way to fill the belly, afaik pumpkins are not reliant on the nature/indy slider for replanting, and if you guys aren't too worried about the quality then anyone can replant them. The only downside is that they take a pretty long time to grow

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the farm has every crop in it, and I have planted loads of pumpkins but the problem is they are realy low quality, despite the fact this is the third time I have planted them...

Seed bags, i have 2 cupboards of them. And once your done harvesting it makes it so easy to sort/replant by tele seeding from the bags in the cupboards.

Hmm, I didn't think to keep the bags open once I leave the cupboard, that should definitely help with my inventory problem, cheers :)

Our village has also found pumpkins to be a useful food. Plant a decent sized plot of them, then just let people go crazy picking them for food whenever it is needed. And since they will be low Q, people won't get too much of the stat if they don't want it.

Yeah, I have roughly 4x6 or so right now, they did come in handy when a miner came all the way from the mines with about 20% starvation ^.^

My farming seems to have been a lot faster now, however I have hit the cap with my carrots and I realy want to raise it, my straw hat is q16 and my friend managed to make a q17 one once he raised his sewing, I just want to check that sewing does effect the quality of straw hats?
