Do they need to be near plants at all to make wax?

Well, no; they don't need to, but it will be excruciatingly slow if they aren't. :)

So...I can't put it in the mine so I don't have to leave to make more candles?
Loftar, can you code me magical dwarf bee's that pollinate my stone walls, and instead of honey they make beer?

Fret not; beer is coming. You probably won't be able to make candles out of it, though. :)

Ah, so the hops will be used after all. Can you make them grow in the mine?

Ha, of course! The dark makes everything so much prettier. It's ok if you don't understand. It's a dwarf thing.

I have a beehive related question so I'll post here instead of making a new thread.

If you put two beehives next to some plants will they grow faster than with one? Or is one beehive going to make them grow just as quickly as 2 of them? If they DO work together then how many radius stacks is the maximum effect?

from memory, each beehive will pollenate one wheat tile per however many clicks.
One wheat tile will not be polinated by multiple bee hives.
If you have two bee hives next to each other and next to a lot of wheat tiles, then they'll cover more tiles quicker but will not cause any individual tile to grow faster.

To put it another way,
If you have 1 wheat tile and 0 bee hives your grow speed is SLOW
if you have 1 wheat tile and 1 bee hive, your grow speed is FAST
if you have 1 wheat tile and 2 bee hives, your grow speed will still be FAST, same as 1 and 1
if you have 2 wheat tiles and 1 bee hive, your grow speed will be ever so slightly slower than 2 wheat tiles and 2 bee hives.
