get the foraging skill. put a couple points into exploration. wander around forest, right click on brown things that are not trees, select "pick". this is a spindly taproot. you can eat it or use it as a string. day and night do not effect it.

If you want to grow flax/hemp, which give plant fibres once harvested, you need to fine things that look like grass or rice, and pick them, they should give a WWW or Wild Window Weed (I don't pick them much, can't even spell them xD) you put this on a drying frame and it should give you seeds.

Yarn, Taproot, Plant fibres and silk threads are all classed as string, but some can be used for things that the rest can't, like plant fibres on a herbalists table.

I think nettles can also be used as string, but not on a fishing rod.

Windsown, not window. :P

But yeah, hemp is where it's at for mass production, but as a noobie you're better off picking taproot. Requires less exploration to find.

In my (albeit limited) experience, I've found about eight WWW's that are hemp and like three flax ones, so it's probable that flax has a lower appearance rate than hemp.

Flax isnt used in larger operations for one simple reason... It causes lag, and in large amounts can make the game into a slide show.
